Application of SWIR Camera in Camouflage Recognition

Short wave infrared (SWIR) technology can be used to identify human camouflage, such as makeup, wigs, and glasses. SWIR technology utilizes the characteristics of the 1000-1700nm infrared spectrum to detect the reflection and radiation characteristics of objects, which can penetrate camouflage materials and obtain the true information of objects.

Makeup: Makeup usually changes a person’s appearance characteristics, but cannot alter their basic physiological structure. SWIR technology can detect the thermal radiation and reflection features of faces by scanning infrared spectra to distinguish between real facial features and makeup camouflage.

Wigs: Wigs are usually made of artificial fibers, which have different reflection characteristics within the SWIR spectral range. By analyzing SWIR images, the presence of wigs can be detected and the real hair of the disguiser can be identified.

Glasses: Glasses typically come in different materials and thicknesses, which produce different reflection and absorption characteristics within the SWIR spectral range. SWIR technology can identify the presence of glasses through differences in infrared radiation and further determine the true eyes of the disguiser.

Short wave technology can help identify camouflage, but there may also be some limitations. For example, if the materials used to disguise an object are similar to those in the surrounding environment, it may cause difficulties in recognition. In addition, SWIR technology is only used to detect the presence of camouflaged objects, and for the identification of camouflaged individuals, other information and technical means need to be combined. However, overall, shortwave infrared cameras play an important role in camouflage recognition in areas such as security monitoring, border patrols, and military intelligence collection.
